National Audubon Society (NAS) is a nonprofit conservation organization, supporting a national network of community-based nature centers and chapters advocating scientific and educational programs and encouraging active participation in environmental issues.

Menunkatuck Audubon Society is a chapter of the National Audubon Society.

Audubon Connecticut, state office of the National Audubon Society, is a leader in bird conservation throughout the state. Along with its members, supporters, and partners, it works together for birds, nature, and people. Through land stewardship, science, education, and advocacy, it works across the state to preserve habitat and protect bird species that are of state, national and global concern; and they identify and support Important Bird Areas (IBAs), a hallmark of Audubon’s efforts worldwide. Audubon Connecticut has centers in Greenwich, Southbury, and Sharon.

Menunkatuck works closely with Audubon Connecticut in many areas including Audubon’s Guilford Salt Meadow Sanctuary and the New Haven Urban Oases.

The Connecticut Audubon Society, founded in 1898, operates nature facilities in Fairfield, Milford, Glastonbury, Pomfret, Hampton, and Sherman, a center in Old Lyme, an EcoTravel office in Essex, and manages 20 wildlife sanctuaries encompassing almost 3,300 acres of open space in Connecticut. Connecticut Audubon is an independent organization, not affiliated with any national or governmental group.

Connecticut Audubon Society’s scientists, educators, citizen scientists, and volunteers work to preserve birds and their environments in Connecticut. Its work includes sanctuary management, advocacy, environmental education and activities at our centers, scientific studies, and an annual Connecticut State of the Birds report.

Menunkatuck works with Connecticut Audubon Society in several coalitions including advocacy issues.

Menunkatuck Audubon Society is a chapter of National Audubon Society with more than 600 members.

Community programs are held each month, September through June, at community centers (on Zoom during the pandemic) with informative programs on birds, the environment, and conservation.

Menunkatuck operates streaming video cameras showing nesting Ospreys, American Oystercatchers, and Roseate and Common Terns.

Menunkatuck offers field trips and volunteer opportunities for habitat restoration, nest box installation and monitoring, and advocating for conservation measures.

Menunkatuck, with our partner Community Placemaking Engagement Network, operates the UrbanScapes Native Plant Nursery in New Haven.
